Indian weddings don't typically have bridesmaids or groomsman. However, for Saurab and I, it is important that we honor the people in our lives that have held us up and had a significant impact. Therefore, we are having the wedding parties. We don't quite know what they are supposed to do yet....I guess we'll make it up.....all I am learning is that the wedding party does a lot of work and doesn't just get to stand next to the bride and groom to look pretty. So, trust me, we'll put 'em to work!
I would love to ask each prospective bridesmaid in person, but given that I am on an island in the freakin midwest, I can't. So, yesterday, I made my first phone call. I asked my best friend from high school, Amber, if she would be a bridesmaid. Funny, I am getting more emotional writing about this, then when I actually asked her. I thought it would be this big emotional ordeal, but it was a two minute conversation....resulting in a "yes" and a "okay, great" .... "have no idea what you have to do, but great".
I guess it went that way because she and I have known for over 15 years now that this day would eventually come, and that this question would be asked. The emotion didn't need to be verbalized. She has been one of my best friends through a LOT of good times and has carried me through even more bad times. Her support and friendship has helped me to be who I am today, and I love her for that. I couldn't imagine her not being decked out in Indian clothes standing next to me on my big day. Thanks, Amber...i love you.
